“Patients over 45 will need a new focus on preventive treatment”

Professor Jimmy Steele, the author of the 2009 Dental Review, gave this warning at a meeting of an all-party parliamentary group for dentistry, chaired by Sir Paul Beresford, the dentist MP.

Professor Steele told the group that 25% of dental work on patients over the age of 45 would be rehabilitation but they would still need a new focus on preventive treatment. Although it may be useful “it would take more than a deftly applied fluoride varnish”. These patients are the group who grew up before significant improvements to dental practices. The good news, however, is that under 45s have healthier teeth than ever before!

“My aim is to keep my teeth for life.”

This is a common goal expressed by so many older adults. For that reason, we featured it on the landing page of www.prevora.com.

But when a recent study reported that the number of teeth in Swedes over the age of 70 was a good indicator of atherosclerosis (plaque accumulation in the arteries), this goal took on even greater importance.  It may be that having more teeth into old age can also mean better overall health.
