This seeming contradictory finding can be explained by the fact that patients < 60 years of age with periodontal disease either died of their cardiovascular condition before age 60, or had their teeth extracted and survived into their 60s . Thus the association of edentulism in old age with cardiovascular disease may reflect early life periodontal problems, as well as poor eating choices associated with edentulousness.
